Well, let us see what the Republicans are up to with less than 24 hours until the polls open on Tuesday, November 07, 2006.

The battle for Congress rolled into a climactic final weekend with Republican Party leaders saying the best outcome they could foresee was losing 12 seats in the House. But they were increasingly steeling themselves for the loss of at least 15 seats.

H.B. 5908 - 5909 - Legislating discrimination

Today the Michigan House of Representatives passed a set of bills (HB 5908 - 5909) which serve NO PURPOSE regarding the improvement of the health and welfare of the 18,000 Michigan children who need a stable, caring home. These bills are a a personal attack on our GLBT community, granting adoption agencies the right to discriminate based on their personal beliefs which violates our Bill of Rights and Michigan Constitution. Please join me in contacting our Senate representatives to urge them to fight this hateful legislation. For more info about HB 5908 - 5909, click here.

Abbasse to face Mark Jansen in General Election

In the highly contested Primary Election race for Michigan’s 28th Senate District, Mark Jansen beat out Joanne Voorhees, Jim Koetje, and Scott Harvey to run against Democrat Albert Abbasse.  Mr. Abbasse sends his best to his former candidates:

Joanne Voorhees, Jim Koetje, and Scott Harvey have run exceptionally good races.  I enjoyed our spirited debate and positive dialogue.  I truly hope that the remainder of this race is as spirited and as honest as the Primary Election.  I am proud that those who sought to represent our district in Michigan’s Senate could campaign without feeling the need to attack and go ‘dirty’ against their opponents, their neighbors, their fellow community members.  It is rare in today’s political landscape to campaign on your own steam, without feeling the need to throw mud at each other in personal attacks.  I congratulate Mr. Jansen on his Primary Election victory and look forward to November’s General Election.

Rockford Chamber of Commerce

As your Democratic candidate for the 28th district State Senate seat in the upcoming election, I was looking forward to participating on the debate panel of senate candidates at the June 5th Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon; which, at one time I was invited to attend.  My team scheduled the event and I was looking forward to a spirited and productive debate with my opponents.  However, I received a call from the Chamber, uninviting me to attend.    Read More...

Farmland Preservation

Agriculture is Michigan’s second largest industry. It contributes $4 billion annually to the state’s economy. Michigan has 52,000 farms of which ninety-seven percent of these are family owned farms, many of which have been in the same family for generations.

Currently, legislators are putting our environment and our family farms at risk. They are pandering to the corporate CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) with legislation that would allow CAFOs to have absolutely NO environmental restrictions or oversight; in fact, it exempts the discharges of CAFO waste by defining the waste as "storm water." These corporate farms will be able to pollute with impunity, while victimizing family farmers and rural residents being poisoned by their “storm water” waste.  Read More...
